What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is designed for universal scalability, making it applicable to anyone with commitment and determination, regardless of current fitness levels or past experiences. While it continues to be the principal strength and conditioning program for many police academies and military special operations, its efficacy is not restricted to a certain population. the types of people who have distinguished themselves through the CrossFit programme range across the spectrum – including housewives, youth, elderly, fire fighters, as well as elite athletes worldwide.

CrossFit’s mission is to forge elite fitness. And the world is watching as that happens! CrossFit began as a training regimen or navy seals. Now, in addition to being widely used with the military and athletes, its methods are bringing people from all generations to superior fitness levels. CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program. It prescribes constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movement. You can expect the unexpected with your workouts. Rather than a specialised fitness program, CrossFit optimizes physical competence within each of the ten fitness domains: Cardiovascular, and respiratory endurance, stamina, strength, flexibility, power, speed, Coordination, agility, balance and accuracy. CrossFit training blends Olympic lifting, strength training, gymnastics and different types of cardiovascular training with varied distances to guarantee training exposure within each of the three metabolic pathways.

There are currently over 10 000 CrossFit boxes worldwide and over 150 in South Africa. But, not all CF boxes are the same. Before you join a box you need to do your homework. You need to be clear about what you want from a CF box. What is important to you? What are your goals? All boxes have similar equipment, everyone boasts that they have the best community vibe and when you become part of that community, it really does feel awesome – whichever box you join. So then, what are the distinguishing features? What is the difference between good and great???

At NCC we believe that distinction lies in the quality of coaching and programming. Between our two head coaches, they have attended almost every CF certification that has been offered in South Africa. They are both level two certified and between them they have qualifications in: Gymnastics, CF kids, Strongman, CF Football and outlaw. They also have the experience of competing at CF’s highest level – the CF games in California.

Their experience goes yond the scope of CrossFit; Leon Manders has been one of Johannesburg’s top personal trainers for over 10 years and carries a wealth of knowledge in strength and conditioning training. Mary Jamieson has run a successful martial arts studio for nearly a decade and has competed at both national and international levels in various sporting codes.

Their appears to be a trend developing in 2017 where south African boxes are looking at introducing new fitness programmes / regimes to their offerings. We at NCC remain firmly committed to remaining a CF affiliated box, where our focus is clearly on doing CrossFit. So, if you want to be a competitive athlete or you are looking for a proven method of getting fitter, stronger and healthier, or if you are training to compete in sport outside of CrossFit, NCC is the right place for you. We believe that doing CF with the right coaches you'll be the correct preparation for whatever else you wish to specialise in.
